I listen to the Sigma Nutrition Radio podcast which is interviews and discussions with professionals and researchers in fields related to nutrition, exercise, and health. Almost every episode is very high quality and the interviews are excellent.

This week the host interviewed Eric Ravussin, PhD to discuss his work with the CALERIE study and CR in general.

Episode 92: Dr. Eric Ravussin of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center is on the show to discuss their recent human trials on the effects of caloric restriction on longevity markers, fasting, hormesis and obesity.

In this episode we discuss:
The CALERIE study conducted at Pennington
How does calorie restriction data in rodents carry over to humans?
The potential mechanisms behind CR increasing longevity
The main biomarkers of longevity
The importance of hormesis in human health
Can fasting or alternate calorie restriction be just as effective?
Is CR potentially detrimental in the context of muscle loss with age and sarcopenic obesity?

Very good interview. I didn't know about this podcast and will start listening regularly. The host Danny Lennon is a sharp guy.

Some highlights:

  • They didn't talk too much about the details of his segment of the CALERIE study, but more about CR mechanisms and benefits in general.
  • Near the beginning of the interview, Dr. Ravussin specifically mentions experiments in "CRONies" from the CR Society, as providing good information, but not being controlled enough to give all the information we'd like to have for CR in humans.
  • At 26:45, they talk about intermittent fasting (IF) vs. CR. He says more research is needed, but he thinks IF can probably produce some of the effects of CR (without as much of a reduction in calories and without as much hardship) via hormesis upregulating autophagy, surtuins, antioxidant defenses, etc.
  • At 36:40, he recommends not starting CR after age 60, especially if you are already thin, due to concerns over sarcopenia and bone loss.
  • At 39:35 he talks about the ambiguous results from the CR primate studies, and speculates about how some of the protocol differences might account for the different results between the two.
