Metformin

Recommended Posts

Just checking in and wondering if anyone here has -- um -- reconsidered pilling metformin? Why? Sighs of impatience: time is passing, beautiful people, and not much progress appears imminent on this scientism-y age-slowing gig. So anyone gambling with low doses? 250 or 500?

Believe me, I've been considering it, given that it's not clear I should be on CR. But CR itself is a much, much better bet for health and longevity than metformin, and there's no reason to believe combining CR and metformin would be helpful.

But I strongly appreciate, and also feel, the "time is passing" sentiment. I'm thinking of all the things we, in the '90s, were promised, and how essentially none of them have materialized.

Apparently Roy wanted to call his book The 160-Year Diet, but the publisher said everyone would have thought that was ridiculous. Now "120-Year Diet" seems a bit far-fetched (though maybe not for someone who starts really young, and sticks to it their whole life).

I thought by the 21st century we'd all be wearing jumpsuits and silver moon-boots. But no. Of course not. And of course David Bowie just HAD to fucking DIE of stupid fucking cancer.

And so I guess this means no one here (haha, all two of you posting at this empty site) has ever ventured into metformin territories? I'm thinking about asking my doctor for some. Why, she'll say, you're healthy and fine. And I'll shrug -- I really wanted to be orbiting Jupiter by now in my life, thinking about stars, and we don't even know if metformin is worth a damn. Shit, am I getting bitter, I said to myself, and disillusioned without silver moon boots?

Yeah, the loss of David Bowie sucks.

(Come on! We're getting there!!  <_< )

I know several smart, non-diabetic physicians who take metformin. Many share the criticisms voiced by Michael of a recent study that purports to support such use. (Rushed, sorry -- but search our site and you'll see Michael's post.)

^^^ yes, yes, more sad mouse stories. But little else appears blooming in the wild human fields of longevity, so why not give goat's rue a chew?

For what it is worth (not much) my father in law is 87 this month, no dementia or other health problems other than some arthritis. He has been on metformin, statins, and metropolol for about 20 years and he has been obese for about the same time. Eats a typical American diet and does not exercise. Former smoker (quit that in his late fifties) and heavy drinker like around 10 beers a day until he was 80 when he quit. Has a good mood and still seems to enjoy life.
