AlPater
Al Pater eyes and blood test follow-up On 26/4/16 I had an optometrist's eyes exam. I was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes, the left one being worse. Cataracts prevented proper visual tests. I was referred to a surgeon who does surgery on high risk patients, since I had a detached retina in my left eye. I saw the surgeon on 13/5/16 and 6/3/16 and had the surgery on 8/25/16. I was not nervous about the cataract surgery. I slept more than enough – my usual 4 times on the 24th-25th. I was offered Ativan by the anesthesiologist, but declined. My blood pressure was 124/80, later 95/60 at the drugstore waiting for the eye drops’ prescriptions. The retinal re-attachment that I had done about ten years ago was much more gruesome. Eye's good, said to go well, wow, I do not need glasses for that eye for distance vision – was previously blind in that eye – and the colours are amazing. There was an irritation from the surgery and stitches and on the first day a runny nose. The eye showed no indication of the surgery, but the eyelids were a little red from the clamps holding them open during the procedure, I guess. I was given a prescription for antibiotics and dexamethasone to reduce the swelling, but the eye felt great the next day. I also got an NSAID drops prescription but I did not need it and stopped taking it after the first day. They want me to get another eye exam from the optometrist and new glasses when both eyes are done and hopefully all goes well, but I bought a pair of half price reading glasses at the Co-op and my reading also is better than it has been in at least ten years. It is a bit of a distortion to use the left eye for distance and reading vision, my brain is pretty used to using only the right eye, not the blind left eye. The distortion extends to the lack of edge effects of my bottom-of-a-Coke-bottle-like old lens. Here, the free health care system covers all the health care for my eyes and blood tests, except the optometrist, glasses, out-of-hospital prescriptions. Now for the blood tests update, which is below. My doctor was concerned about my high TSH, so we got thyroid hormones checked up after two months, and I got him to follow-up test some other markers that were not normal. Overall, there was not a lot of change. My take is that the blood immune cells are a bit closer to normal, platelets and RBCs/hemoglobin are a little lower. Sodium and chloride were the highest in a while, and the former was normal range. Thyroid hormones were closer to normal. The thousand IU vitamin D supplement daily plus morning constitutional pushed up blood levels and I will cut down on the vitamin B12 to once every two days of the few crumbs of the 1.2 mg pills. I feel good and usually test my blood pressure at 10 pm two hours after finishing eating and get readings of approximately 110/75 and a heart rate of 58 beats/min. It is not as good as it has been. I eat a little salt/turmeric mixture on my microwaved potatoes, using my fork to dip one or two prongs into the mixture with a small piece of potato. Doing that and cutting down fluid intake about a cup may also have helped to raise my sodium and chloride a smidget. ============================================ Blood test 22/8/16 22/6/16 10/8/15 19/1/15 9/07/14 22/01/14 19/11/13 24/05/13 18/01/13 13/09/12 05/07/12 06/07/12 29/03/12 29/12/11 Sept 8/11 May 26/11 Mar 10/11 Dec. 14/10 Aug 31/10 May 20/10 Jan 22/10 Sept. 2/09 June 2/09 Feb. 11, 2009 Jan. 9, 2009 June 23/08 Apr 10/06 Aug/05 May/05 Mar/05 (Ref. Dean Pomerleau
Hi Al! Thanks for sharing your latest health challenges, and blood tests. Sorry to hear about your eye troubles, but I'm very happy to hear the surgery went well, and you're seeing better than you have in years. That must be an amazing feeling to see well again! Regarding your blood tests, it looks like you are pretty stable and pretty seriously CRed - perhaps a little too seriously CRed IMO, but you know that. Your WBC came up a bit, which is good to see, but still seems like it might be too low for someone your age. BTW, it might be helpful if you shared some of your demographic information to put your bloodwork in context, i.e. age, height, weight, BMI. --Dean
AlPater
Thanks, Dean, My weight is 41.1 kg; height is 63.5 inches (with about 7 inches height lost to kyphosis and spinal compression fractures) = a final 18.1 BMI. I gained 10 pounds in the last 15 months, to 107.8 pounds this morning. I eat vegan food and exercise moderately. I am 69 years old and a retired professor of basic medical sciences. We did research, mainly in human papillomavirus oncology.
Dean Pomerleau
Thanks Al, That's helpful. You've lost 7 inches!? - wow. I knew you'd had spinal compression fractures, but I didn't realize it was that much. Good to hear you've gained a substantial amount of weight. At your age and given some of your health challenges, that seems quite wise. --Dean
AlPater
On 5/11/16 I had my second, now right, eye cataract surgery and it went pretty much the same as the first surgery – blood pressure 124/80 before they started the eye surgery, about 20 minutes from laying down to done – except my vision was not improved much initially and now is much better but somewhat worse for distant vision than the left eye. Before the two cataract surgeries, I would get dry eye and apparent eye infections every couple weeks to months, but now I get them hardly at all. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Doctor visit/tests Doctor office tests on: 8/6/17 22/7/16 31/5/16 21/6/16 27/6/16 Random glucose 6.8 - 4.6 – - (3.6-10 mM) Blood pressure 106/60 114/? 129/76 125/76 118/69 Heart rate 65 68 59 59 55 Weight [50.6 kg=111.55 pounds] [-] [41.1 kg=90.6 pounds] ... mccoy
Al, happily all has gone for the best, I hope your sight is going to improve even more, sure the very healthy regimen you are following helps.
Gordo
I see you gained another 20 lbs moving up to a 20 BMI as you hit the 70 year mark. What was your rationale for that (assuming it was intentional) and what is your longer term plan? Regards, Gordo

I notice that too, and thought to myself "good for Al!". Al, you've been so thin for so long, with a few eating issues along the way. I'm very impressed that you've been able to gain like that, and I definitely think it is the wise thing to do. Hardcore CR after 70 seems ill-advised. Are you exercising to make sure a good fraction of it is muscle? --Dean
AlPater
Thanks, people. I have continuing weight gain but the latest year-to-year change in the doctor's office was affected by clothes worn and food and drink consumed before weighing. I am exercising more too, in that I walk Checkers now who looks remarkably like http://www.greatdogsite.com/photos/gallery/Shichon/?index=10 when he was that age. He was born Boxing Day, but is still a handful. He is the first dog I have owned/shared with my wife.

KHashmi317
I have continuing weight gain but the latest year-to-year change in the doctor's office was affected by clothes worn and food and drink consumed before weighing. Weight can fluctuate quite bit over 24 hrs. In 2006, at WUSTL, Luigi measured me around 4pm (just after my arrival) and I weighed ~122lbs (with just shorts on). He was going to record THAT as my official weight but I asked to be re-weighed the next morning (after rising, and visiting the toilet). Weight had dropped to 117lbs (with shorts). In 2003, at WUSTL, my recorded weight was also ~122lbs, but I never asked to be re-weighed in the morning. IAC, after years and years of smooth sailing, I don't like messing with my hardcore weight -- much less my "boring" menu or routinized lifestyle. Given my height and BMI, I'm roughly in Al's "range". It works for me ;) Glad to see you holdin' in, Al !!
AlPater
Comments on the below data are welcome. I gained weight over the year but the height increases confuse me. Overall the results are okay and pretty consistent with previous results, but the blood lipids are higher and I decided to cut down on and then out of my 20-25 g each of daily canola and extra virgin olive oils. Note how the testosterone normal reference range goes down as we men get older. When I was severely CRing my testosterone was lower than it now is many years later. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Doctor visit/tests Doctor office tests on: 4/7/18 8/6/17 22/7/16 31/5/16 21/6/16 27/6/16 Random glucose 6.8 6.8 - 4.6 – - (3.6-10 mM) Blood pressure 102/62 106/60 114/? 129/76 125/76 118/69 Heart rate 66 65 68 59 59 55 Weight [54.5=120.15 pounds] [50.6 kg=111.55 pounds] [-] [41.1 kg=90.6 pounds] ...
