Vitamin D may have a dark side????

Recommended Posts

So woman who were deficient in vitamin D and then given 2000 iu daily showed sleep quality declines if there levels rose above 32 ng/ml. There is also evidence that vitamin D in high doses causes disruption of melatonin production see 2nd reference. Michel Rae recently reviewed his intake of vitamin D on longecity and I wondered why he was sticking to just enough to get him at 30 ng/ml and I assumed he was being cautious and for good reason as these studies indicate that even 2000 i.u. May be too much for some of us. I am currently taking about 1000 iu in the 6 months with low sunlight and none in the 6 months with adequate sun. My test in February was 29 and in September it was 30 ng/ml

I'll chime in, even though my post may disappear, as so often happens these days. I am not sure how supplementation impacts vit. D blood serum status - I say this because I've had my status measured once yearly for 16 years now, and I've kept a supplement diary for almost as long. Honestly, my vit. D status seems almost completely disconnected from supplementation. I've supplemented anwhere from 0 to 400IU to 1000IU and my status is all over the place with no seeming connection. This year, it's 26 compared to last year of 31 - and I've supplemented with the same 1000IU from TJ's vit. D3 sold there - and I can't say that I've changed my diet much insofar as sources of vit. D (small amounts of salmon and sardines, mushrooms), or my sun exposure. Also I wonder what the relation of serum vit. D status is to tissue saturation - various tissues accumulate or use vit. D in differing amounts, what's circulating in your blood after a 12 hour fast may have weak relationship to tissue amounts.

Tom, maybe you should just try a different vitamin D supplement?

After using vitamin D (5000 IU +), my levels went up to 304 nmol/L (121 ng/dl).

I've never noticed issues with sleep either...

I only take between 1000-2000 now.

Guest rudolph marcus

Just saw a video from Mercola, where he stated that it takes 48 hour for making vitamin d out of your cholesterol and sunshine (UVB) , but, and here is the novice, if you shower with hot water and/or use shampoo/shower gel within 48 hour after your sunbath you wash away the vitamine D out of your skin. I didnot check it further but found it worth mentioning :-)
