Do SOME (non-vitamin) antioxidants work unusually well? Does age affect their effectiveness

Recommended Posts

Melatonin, astaxanthin, lutein, green tea, CBD => all have robust pro-longevity properties and are robust antioxidants. Plants need high doses of antioxidants b/c they're exposed to the intense sun (though the sun causes sun-stress and the cold causes other kinds of stress - is there a difference between tropical and non-tropical ones]

Nrf2/KEAP are activated by oxidative stress, but you can just directly activate them

Glutathionine supplementation is helpful in *older* individuals who have compromised glutathionine levels

One can say the phytochemicals of plant metabolites induce hormesis and it's these phytochemicals that are responsible for the pro-longevity effects of many plants, but they often combine BOTH antioxidants with hormetic/stress-inducing mechanisms, which presumably might prevent the antioxidants from suppressing the endoganeous human stress response.

I know there are some research papers showing that increasing oxidative stress a tiny tiny bit (eg paraquat) can increase longevity, but this is all through hormesis.

There are mitochondrially tageted antioxidants that presumably don't interfere with redox signalling in other parts of the cell
