You may be interested in participating in the Shape Up! Study. We are funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), so there is NO cost to you for participating in the study. ALL study procedures will take place at University of California, San Francisco (Parnassus Campus) The goals of the study: Provide phenotype descriptors of health using body shape, derive predictive models of how body shape relates to regional and total body composition and bone mineral density over a wide ranges of ages, BMI, and ethnicity for both sexes. Examine the relationship of optical body composition estimates and metabolic risk factors. If you are between 5-17 years old, you might be eligible for Shape Up! Kids (pdf) If you are between 18-80 years old, you might be eligible for Shape Up! I asked them about locations and about radiation exposure for participants. They said: 1. The study takes place at UCSF Parnassus Campus. So you need to be in the area to participate in the study. 2. Participants will be exposed to radiation from the DXA scan. The DXA scan uses very low dose ionizing X-ray radiation to determine body composition. The radiation you will receive is about equivalent to the amount of radiation you are exposed to while living on earth for one day (about 3 mrem of radiation – an amount far less than the annual background radiation in the US). The 3D optical scans do not use radiation to capture the image. The 3D scans use a digital camera. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

However, under "Benefits," you list only: A $50 Amazon gift card Body composition reports (DXA report, MRI (for kids only), whole body 3D scan) Complete blood count report Will subjects not get reports on their metabolic risk factors? That's a substantial loss of incentive for CR people, who are strongly motivated to explore their own health, and was a major disappointment in a previous UCSF CR study. I just spoke to the study people through their telephone number; and unfortunately I don't qualify for the study -- the reason: My right shoulder was replaced; and they exclude people who have had a major joint replacement. I should note, that they have different slots for different sets of people -- classified by age, ethnicity and BMI. (I would have qualified if I hadn't had a joint replacement). Slots are filling up quickly -- so unless you're of a very unusual ethnicity or wahtnot, if you want to participate in this study, it's probably wise to apply soon! -- Saul Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Participants will not receive reports on their metabolic blood markers (Glucose, Triglycerides, Cholesterol, etc.). We conduct all specimen analysis, with the exception of the CBC test, at our partner site (Pennington Biomedical Research Center). We de-identify the specimen that is shipped and do not receive the results immediately. What health information adult participants will receive: The DXA report will tell you about fat, lean, and bone mass. The 3D optical scan will give you a 3D image of your body shape, along with hundreds of measurements (circumferences, lengths, widths, etc.), check out fit3d.com for more information. The complete blood count test includes the following; white blood cell count, red blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, and platelet count. Feel free to ask any other questions, we are happy to clarify any details. (To "AIL": Doesn't strike me as weird at all. It would be far weirder, in the 21st century, to use pieces of paper tacked on walls, or invent a non-global Internet simply for purposes of advertising for this study locally, nicht wahr?)
